F. Peter
Ortner

F. Peter Ortner is Cheng Tsang Man Early Career Chair Professor and MArch Programme Coordinator for Architecture and Sustainable Design at Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). He is director of the Adaptive Design Lab and the Net Zero Futures Lab, an interdisciplinary collaboration targeting enabling technologies for the transition to a net zero whole lifecycle built environment.

Peter's research leverages computational techniques to create sustainable architecture and urban design. His current research introduces optimisation of environmental parameters into generative masterplanning for climate adaptive cities. Ongoing research projects include opening up building management systems to a broader public to accelerate sustainable use of buildings, analysis of avoided carbon emissions through the design of adaptive buildings and adaptive reuse, and the creation of deep learning surrogate models that predict energy use and carbon intensity of the urban built environment.

He holds a PhD from EPF Lausanne, an MArch from the Harvard Graduate School of Design where he was recipient of the Faculty Design Award, and a BA in Architecture cum laude from Yale University. He has practised architecture in Geneva, Switzerland and Boston, Massachusetts.
